Ladies, there is no reason to settle for anything less than you are worth. If your company is not paying women fairly, move on to something or somewhere else. If the benefits for maternity/family leave are not enough, move on to something or somewhere else. If your company isn’t giving you the flexibility you need, move onto something or somewhere else.

There are lots of different companies out there and some have better pay scales and better benefits than others. Sites like fairygodboss and glassdoor are great ways to research prospective companies in the US. Many countries have similar sites as well, including: JobAdvisor (Australia), Jobeehive (India), JobCrowd (UK), Kununu (Austria, Germany, Switzerland), RateMyemployer (Canada).

Or you can go out and start your own business. Many women choose this option because they prefer to be their own boss or to manage their own schedule (and have ability to be flexible, as needed).

According to the 2018 State of Women Owned Business Report by American Express, in the US:

  • 40% of businesses in the US are owned by women. That is a 58% increase from 2007 (while all businesses increased by only 12% in the same period)!
  • Businesses owned by women of color have grown 163% overall, with Latinas and African American women leading the way (172% and 164%, respectively)!

Legislation, although well intended, does little to help women in the areas of pay and benefits, but supply and demand can change things dramatically. If a company continually loses its women employees because their pay or benefits cannot compete with other employers – they will notice and they will need to make changes.

No company wants to have the reputation of not being able to retain women employees.

We can change things by not settling for less than we are worth.
